In the common Chinese blessing, “Gong Xi Fa Cai”, the third character, “Fa,” means “growing bigger” or “growing more bountiful” in English. When spoken, the word has a similar sound to the Chinese word for the number eight, “Ba,” which has special significance as a lucky number in all Chinese cultures and dialects. With thousands of Chinese cultures and dialects in the world, this is one of few traditions consistent across them all.
